Carefully designed extension and alterations

EP Architects were approached following two previous planning refusals, for extensions to this beautiful Grade II listed property.
We worked closely with a local planning consultant, engaging the planning authority in two stages of pre-application advice. It was agreed that a modern design referencing an existing timber clad shed, in the location of the new extension, was the best solution. The enlargement of an existing dormer was also approved, updating an existing bedroom and creating a new en-suite shower room.
The building previously had mismatching casement windows in timber and uPVC, concrete and broken clay tiles. New handmade timber casement windows have been installed with modern slim-line double glazed units, as agreed with the conservation officer.

The project

Watch the video

EP Architects have created a light airy modern space for our clients, improving the flow and efficiency of the living space while providing wide open views of the beautiful Kent landscape.  This modern extension sits alongside the listed building, with a lightweight connecting structure, clearly defining where old ends and new begins. The glass link gently kisses up to the house, utilising handmade clay tiles to tie the extension into the existing structure.
Inspired by the original finishes of the previous structure, the oak cladding is complimented by floor to ceiling vertical slots of glazing along the east elevation. Internally, these windows link the new kitchen to the landscape around it and draw warm natural light into the space.
This new structure benefits from a highly insulated design and efficient underfloor heating.

Review

EP Architects helped us to obtain planning permission for an extension to our Grade 2 listed cottage. Daniel has patiently dealt with the planning and conservation officers to produce a scheme acceptable to all parties. Daniel and everyone at Ep Architects were professional, friendly and always responded quickly to move the project along. Would highly recommend.
